Oriental delights in Wembley
Alisan is a large, modern, bright Chinese restaurant that opened in 2006. It has a good pedigree, with links to the Aroma restaurants in Chinatown and a dim sum chef who has served time at Yauatcha. The dim sum are served until 17.00 hours and then the very typical long Chinese menu takes centre stage. It is unlikely that you will wrestle with the map book to drive out here on a whim as this place is hard to find and somewhat out on a limb. Unless you happen to be attending a concert at Wembley Arena or a game at the stadium, in which case Alisan changes from being 'off the beaten track' to a 'handy godsend' in pretty short order. From the dim sum list some of the more unusual dumplings catch the eye - white marrow prawn dumpling; prawn and enoki mushroom dumpling; asparagus cheung fun; and baked barbecue pork puff, which is right up there with the leaders: the pork puffs at Royal China (see p. 79) and the venison puffs at Hakkasan (see p. 7). You'll find all the usual suspects on the main menu - steamed scallops with ginger and spring onion come up rather small and maybe the stir-fried razor clams with garlic shoots would be a better option, or there's baked fresh crab with chilli and black pepper. lgnore the stir-fried ostrich and go for the simple roast duck. The Singapore noodle is full of tasty bits and pieces. The service is friendly enough although it will need to be very crisp on concert nights when everyone in the 200-seater dining room calls for their bill at the same moment!

Oriental delights in Wembley
... The charming General Manager, Keith Tsang, showed us into the cavernous modern bar upstairs with its large blackleather sofas. It commands a perfect view of the stadium and offers a good choice of classic cocktails accompanied by exotic bar snacks, such as Mango Spring Roll. The last time I'd had a Mai Tai was in Hawaii years ago. As I began to reminisce my companion caught the mood. Sipping his Tsingtao beer he turned to watch the setting sun cast a rosy glow over the stadium and somehow felt reminded of a bar overlooking the Blue Mosque in Istanbul... 'Time to eat.' I said. 'Let's go downstairs.' For variety we decided to go for the Dim Sum menu (a mixture of small dishes like the Spanish tapas) rather than a traditional three-course meal. It was a good choice as this was no ordinary noodle joint. Have you ever seen ostrich on the menu of a Chinese restaurant before? Or venison? Here they have both. They also have some high-class talent working in the kitchen. The Dim Sum chef, c.c. Wong, had previously been at the Michelin-starred Yautacha Restaurant in London's West End, and the Head Chef, G.W. Dai, came from the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Singapore...

Anyone who's dined at Heavenly Hot Dogs on the walkway to Wembley's stunning new stadium knows the area has been in dire need of a decent place to eat. Now there is one. Newly opened Alisan serves up an inspired Chinese menu. Sure, there's the usual egg fried rice and prawn toast, but how about salt and pepper lotus root (an exotic version of homemade crisps), or lamb rack in black coffee sauce with chocolate chips (an unusual sweet and bitter mix)? The combinations are adventurous, and some are an acquired taste, but thank God for innovation in a culinary genre that doesn't often stray from the standard takeway menu.

With its name derived from a mountain in Taiwan, this new and upmarket Chinese forms part of the £1.3b regeneration which encompasses the new Wembley Stadium and the surrounding area. What is striking is that the restaurant takes a prime spot bang opposite the glistening stadium and is bound to attract hordes of punters. In the meantime, the large 200 seater Alisan is content with serving locals with cooking which leans on the modern albeit with some familiar Cantonese favourites. Colourful dim sum items include a green-hued bamboo mooli dumpling to threestyle mushroom wrapped in carrot strip to scallop with pork. Steamed diver scallops with vermicelli is gorgeously addictive while the spinach broth with razor clam, ginger and spring onion is just lush. Mains like venison strips in black pepper and garlic along with jumbo prawns with chilli are very well rendered. Desserts are quite European in execution.

This new upmarket Chinese, named after a mountain in Taiwan, is cannily located opposite the new Wembley Stadium. Cooking leans towards fusion flavours, though Cantonese classics are not forgotten. Steamed diver scallop with vermicelli comes in a moreish garlic and soy sauce, while mains have an adventurous streak: resoundingly good venison in black pepper and garlic, plump king prawns in ginger and chilli, or gorgeously subtle baked silver cod in champagne sauce...

Oh Alisan… what’s a nice place like you doing in a place like this?
That would have been the case a few years ago for sure. The idea of a good restaurant – of any style – in Wembley? Are you mad? A place synonymous with overpriced burgers, warm beer and an assortment of warm lard outlets between the stadium and the tube?

The owners of this trendy Chinese opposite the new Wembley Stadium must be thrilled by their star signing. Dim sum chef CC Wong was poached from prestigious Yauatcha - the Chinese culinary equivalent of Crystal Palace signing Wayne Rooney. During a recent lunchtime visit we glanced at the menu to find Wong had brought many of our favourite Yauatcha treats with him. The cheung fun were slightly thick, but wonderfully soft, enclosing perfectly cooked king prawns. Scallop shumai also impressed with fresh, moist seafood and flying fish roe. The fried items we tried were all wonderful, but the star player was the fried squid cake accompanied by a potent lemongrass sauce.

Ensconced bang opposite the new Wembley Stadium, this modern and cavernous Chinese ... will likely reap dividends once the crowds start streaming through the stadium next year. Contemporary fusion cooking dominates with the dim sum [fluorescent green sticky mooli dumplings to the scallop with pork parcels and the duck and shitake beancurd rolls] eye-catchingly rendered in bamboo baskets by ex-Yauatcha dim sum chef CC Wong. The à la carte menu ... with its quotient of Cantonese standards ... several notable entries are an excellent spinach broth with razor clam tinged with spring onion and ginger, a robust dish of venison strips in black pepper and garlic, juicy whole king prawns with chilli and a light baked silver cod in champagne sauce. Presentation is strong throughout and service super-efficient.
